Silas

July 31, 2009

This is little Silas! His parents and I went to high school together, but this was the first chance I got to meet Silas since I was living in Ireland. I was literally keeping track of mom’s status updates on facebook the days leading up to his birth. Like many of my friends, he’s what I call one of my ‘facebook’ babies and its an absolute treat finally getting to know them all in person!

He was teething….so everything, including daddy’s hands were fair game for a little nibble.

I love this face!

Hey Cupcake!

July 26, 2009

The weekend of my sisters wedding, I had the chance to check out Austin a bit more (since that is eventually where we are going to end up hopefully in the next month or two). And once we discovered South Congress, I was in love. Its funky, hip, and affordable. Its everything about Austin that I want to be a part of. Believe me, there will be many, many more posts about Austin this year.

One unique and famous landmark is the ‘Hey Cupcake’ airstream trailer on South Congress. There are a few of these little trailers parked along this road and this one sells only the most delicious and perfect cupcakes.

Isn’t this the coolest and cutest trailer you’ve ever seen!

And, to keep you shaded…they had pink umbrellas to hold while you wait inline.

And even Uncle Mike, former body builder and school principal, found this solution very practical.

But, its all about the cupcakes…and oh, my, god…they were good.

And…my uncle Mickey quite enjoyed the ‘whipper snapper!’

Yummo!

This was another one of the airstreams serving up food on a hot day.

But, the cupcakes were a huge hit. Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough pictures of the cupcakes themselves because they were gobbled up much too quickly

…so I guess I am just going to have to go back and order some more, for photo purposes of course.

Athens

July 18, 2009

Athens has a special place in this girl’s heart and this most certainly won’t be my last visit. This is a gritty and chaotic city…and I love it!

 Athens-10

I think the theatre is one of my favorites because you can see the centre throne and the chairs in the front row that were for dignitaries. Athens-11 Athens-12

Can’t you just picture it all! Athens-13

Athens-18

The soldier at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Can you believe they were wearing full on cotton tights in such hot weather.

 Athens-23

And you gotta love the footwear.

Then we visited the National Archeological Museum…

Where we saw Zeus! This arm was huge!

Athens-31

But this was my favorite statue…that little horny goat (he’s a god of the underworld) is trying to get it on with Greek goddess (I think its Aphrodite). She is trying to beat him away with her shoe. Oh and her son, that little angle, is trying to bitch slap this guy!

And, because Greece was so much more affordable than Switzerland, we splashed out on a swank hotel.

Baking with Auntie Roz

July 9, 2009

My little sister is getting married this Saturday…yikes! This week to prepare for the big event, we have flown the queen of baking…my incredible Auntie Roz (and her darling assistant daughter, Tricia) down to Texas to oversee “operation wedding cookies!”. I grew up on these cookies…my Nonnie (that’s Italian for grandma) would send care packages to Texas filled with these treats…and the pink wedding cookies are our favorites.

We had three kitchen aid mixers on hand…my moms, (in the background there) …my sister’s (there is the happy bride!)

…and my baby!

…’hello beautiful!’ Its been a present bought a year ago that has been patiently waiting for my return back to Texas…isn’t it gorgeous (I have already baked three loaves of bread using this beast)

Auntie Roz inspected our dough…teaching us the ‘feel’ of the dough. Because no recipe works right every time…you have to know the right texture,…if its soft or sticky, hard or pliable….and how to adjust it.

Now time to roll the dough into balls…

Mandy Jo’s got it now…

In the oven they go!

and time to roll some more

We made 28 dozen of these bad boys.

And then we moved on to chocolate cookies

Momma is trying to keep count as we were frosting.

And then the almond crescents

and even mints…

After several hours of unsuccessful begging…Hank finally gave up.

But that was one happy bride to be!

I am looking forward to Saturday!
